Description

The term "social jetlag" has been associated with a number of health conditions in children, adolescents, and adults, including obesity, However, its pathogenesis is somewhat different from travel-related jetlag. It may share more features with shift work sleep disorder.


The key underlying feature of social jetlag is a changing pattern of sleep-wake timing on different days of the week.

(1) On weekdays the person may go to bed late and have to get up early for work or school.

(2) On weekends the person can sleep more and sleep later.

 

Consequences:

(1) sleep deficiency with daytime sleepiness

(2) dysfunctional eating, with irregular patterns of eating and a tendency to eat calorie dense foods

(3) fatigue

(4) poor performance

(5) obesity
