Description

The soap suds enema is an enema prepared from ingredients that may be readily available for many people. In general it is relatively safe, effective and inexpensive.


Mechanism: fluid volume with mucosal irritant effect

 

The enema solution consists of a mild soap mixed with water. The soap should be one that has been proven to be safe and effective for this use. Castile soap is an olive oil based soap that has been used for this purpose.

 

Recipe:

(1) 0.5 to 2 liters of water

(2) 4 to 30 mL of liquid soap per liter

 

Once placed in an enema bag it should be warmed to around 102-103°F prior to administration.

 

Complications are usually uncommon:

(1) abdominal pain

(2) nausea and vomiting

 

Risk factors for complications:

(1) too much soap

(2) inappropriate soap

(3) temperature either too cool or too warm

(4) underlying comorbid conditions
