Skunks release an oily defense spray from special glands.
Chemical components in the spray include:
(1) 2-methylquinoline
(2) 2-quinonemethanethiol
(3) S-2-quinolinemethyl thioacetate
(4) 2 phenylethanethiol
(5) bis(E)-2-butenyl disulphide
(6) bis(3-methylbutyl) disulphide
(7) butyl thiols
Effect on humans:
(1) offensive odor
(2) nausea and vomiting
Uncovered bowls of vinegar can help to mitigate the odor.
A mixture of Dawn dish soap, vinegar and baking soda can be used for cleaning and washing.
