Description

Scuba diving and wearing a diving suit may be associated with a number of skin conditions.


Allergic contact dermatitis:

(1) scuba diver facial dermatitis (reaction to synthetics in the mask)

(2) diving suit dermatitis (reaction to synthetics in the suit)

(3) earplugs or nose clamps

(4) fins or fin straps

 

The presence of various chemicals in the suits or mask can cause a toxic dermatitis.

 

Skin occlusion from a tightly fitting swim suit can cause a folliculitis due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) dermatitis from coming into contact with marine environment

(2) aquagenic urticaria
