Description

A number of injuries can occur to the thumbs of a skier, referred collectively as "skier's thunb". These are more common in the downhill skier.

The most common lesion associated with skier's thumb is rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb.

Other lesions may include:

(1) avulsion fracture involving the ulnar collateral ligament

(2) fracture of the ulnar volar aspect of the proximal phalanx

(3) fracture of the radial aspect of the proximal phalanx

(4) oblique fracture of the ulnar sesamoid bone of the metacarpophalangeal joint

(5) rupture of the thumb radial collateral ligament

MRI is useful in identifying the precise injuries present.
