Description

A skier may have fracture of the lower extremities if the safety bindings for the boots do not release properly.

The fracture involves the distal tibiofibular complex, from the top of the boot to above the ankle.

Risk factors:

(1) safety bindings that do not release for a specific movement or condition

(2) moving at a relatively slow speed (a higher momentum would trigger the boot release)

Similar fractures can be seen in pedestrians struck by an automobile, especially if the pedestrian is wearing boots with lugged soles.
