Callahan et al developed a short instrument to screen for cognitive impairment. The authors are from Indiana University and Regenstrief Institute for Health Care in Indianapolis.
Items:
(1) What year is it?
(2) What month is it?
(3) What day of the week is it?
(4) able to remember: apple

Response
Points
correct
1
incorrect
0
score =
= SUM(points for all 6 items)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 6
• A score of 4 (2 errors) had a sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 80% for cognitive impairment in the community sample. It had a sensitivity of 97% and specificity of 67% for dementia.
• A score of 3 (3 errors) had a sensitivity of 50% and specificity of 97% for cognitive impairment in the community sample. It had a sensitivity of 89% and specificity of 88% for dementia.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve was 0.86-0.91 for cognitive impairment and 0.92-0.95 for dementia.
