Description

Blunt aortic injury may follow any accident involving rapid deceleration of the victim. The possibility of aortic trauma should be considered when any of these situations are encountered.


 

The most common cause of blunt aortic injury is a motor vehicle accident, especially a head-on crash.

 

Other situations that can result in blunt aortic injury:

(1) pedestrian struck by a vehicle

(2) airplane crash

(3) fall from height

(4) motorcycle accident

(5) vehicle struck by a train

(6) compression by a heavy object

(7) burial with entrapment

(8) any massive blow to the thorax
