Description

Kawasaki Disease can be difficult to diagnose especially when the index of suspicion is low.


Situations where the diagnosis of Kawasaki Disease may not be initially considered:

(1) infant less than 6 months of age with only prolonged fever and irritability

(2) fever and pyuria ascribed to a urinary tract infection

(3) skin rash or erythema diagnosed as a drug reaction

(4) fever with aseptic pleocytosis of the CSF misdiagnosed as aseptic meningitis

(5) cervical lymphadenitis

(6) prominent GI symptoms mimicking an acute abdomen

(7) retropharyngeal or parapharyngeal phlegmon unresponsive to antibiotic therapy

(8) unexplained, culture-negative shock

(9) arthritis or arthralgias
