Description

A patient with colorectal cancer may develop local and distant metastases, depending on the location of the primary tumor, its depth of invasion and differentiation.


 

Most common sites for metastases (up to 60-80% of patients with invasive tumors):

(1) regional lymph nodes

(2) liver

 

Additional sites showing metastases with some frequency:

(1) lung

(2) peritoneum

 

Less common sites (10-20% of patients):

(1) adrenal glands

(2) bone

(3) pleura

(4) ovaries (in females)

 

Least frequent sites (< 10% of patients):

(1) brain

(2) kidney

(3) skin or subcutaneous tissue

(4) spleen
