Description

Gill et al reported simplified scoring to motor and verbal scales of the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). These can be used in prehospital patient evaluation. The authors are from Loma Linda University.

Patient selection: out-of-hospital traumatic brain injury

Rationale for simplifying scores:

(1) A chaotic prehospital scene requires simple patient assessments.

(2) Interrater variability in the Glasgow Coma Score can vary.

(3) Assessments of verbal or motor status perform almost as well as the complete GCS in outcomes.
