The fibrosis associated with asbestosis can be graded using a simplified version of the CAP-NIOSH criteria.
Specimens: larger pieces of tissue from thoracoscopy, lobectomy or pneumonectomy
Histologic Features |
Grade |
peribronchial fibrosis involving 0 to 49% of bronchioles |
0 |
peribronchial fibrosis in >= 50% of bronchioles on a slide, with fibrosis confined to the bronchial walls and the first adjacent tier of alveoli |
1 |
extension of fibrosis beyond the first tier of adjacent alveoli with sparing of some alveoli between adjacent respiratory bronchioles |
2 |
fibrotic thickening in the walls of all alveoli between 2 or more adjacent respiratory bronchioles |
3 |
honeycomb lung |
4 |
If more than one slide is examined:
average grade =
= SUM(grades for all slides examined) / (number of slides examined)
