Hakki et al used a simplified formula to estimate the area of a stenotic aortic or mitral valve. The authors are from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia.
Parameters:
(1) cardiac output in liters per minute
(2) peak pressure gradient across the valve in mm Hg
(3) mean pressure gradient across the valve in mm Hg
(4) stenotic valve (aortic or mitral)
area of stenotic aortic valve in square cm =
= (cardiac output) / SQRT(peak gradient)
area of stenotic aortic or mitral valve in square cm =
= (cardiac output) / SQRT(mean gradient)
