Description

Li et al reported a simplified version of the Early Acute Lung Injury (EALI) score of Levitt et al. The purpose of the score is to predict acute lung injury prior to respiratory failure. The authors are from multiple institutions in China, New Zealand, the United States and England.

Patient selection: acute care setting

Change from original EALI: removal of baseline immunosuppression.

Parameters:

(1) oxygen requirement in liters per minute

(2) respiratory rate in breaths per minute

Parameter

Finding

Points

oxygen requirement

<= 2 liters per minute

0

2.01 to 6.0 l/min

1

> 6 liters per minute

2

respiratory rate

< 30 breaths per minute

0

>= 30 breaths/minute

1

total score =

= SUM(points for all of the parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 3

• The higher the score the greater the risk of acute lung injury.
