The use of scoring systems is important in managing patients with atopic dermatitis in order to monitor changes in activity over time. One of the scoring systems proposed by Costa et al was intended to be simple and easy to use.
Parts of scoring system:
(1) intensity of dermatitis: 10 symptoms of atopic dermatitis, scored from 0 to 7, with the most severely affected area selected for evaluation of each criterion
(2) topography: 5 symmetrical and 5 nonsymmetrical parts of the body, scored from 0 to 3

= (sum of points for intensity) + (sum of points for topography)

• minimum intensity score: 0
• maximum intensity score: 70
• minimum topography score: 0
• maximum topography score: 30
• minimum total score: 0
• maximum total score: 100
