Nickel et al reported a prognostic score for an alert and calm patient in the Emergency Department (ED). This can help to identify patients at increased risk of mortality. The authors are from University Hospital Basel, Hospital of South West Jutland, University Hospital of South Manchester and University Hospital Odense.
Patient selection: ED patient who is alert and calm
Outcome: 30-day and 1-year mortality
Parameters:
(1) admitted to the hospital
(2) impaired mobility on presentation (lack of stable independent gait)
(3) age in years
(4) vital signs on presentation

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 4
• A score of 0 or 1 was associated with a 0% chance of 30-day mortality.
• The higher the score the greater the risk of 1-year mortality.
