Description

Perkins et al developed a simple formula for estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using serum cystatin C. The authors are from Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and Stanford University.

Parameters:

(1) serum cystatin C concentration in mg/L

GFR in mL per min per 1.73 square meter BSA =

= 100 / (serum cystatin C in mg/L)

The main use does not appear to be an accurate prediction of the GFR at any one momemt as to detect deterioration of renal function in a high-risk population over time. If this is the goal, then plotting serum cystatin C over time might be equally effective (with an upward trend indicating deterioration in renal function).
