Description

Simon's bleedings or hemorrhages refer to bleeding affecting the intervertebral disks as a result of some form of injury.

Features:

(1) It is most often seen in the lumbar intervertebral disks.

(2) There are streaky hemorrhages along the ventral surface beneath the anterior longitudinal ligament.

(3) Hemorrhages may also involve the dorsal surface.

Causes:

(1) hanging

(2) asphyxia

(3) hypothermia

(4) electrocution

(5) blunt trauma with forced extension or flexion of the lumbosacral spine

It is considered a vital sign.

It would be interesting to see if there is any association between severity of the hemorrhages and a bleeding disorder or anticoagulant therapy.
