Description

A homeowner may notice a number of findings that could indicate a sinkhole may be developing on the property.


 

Findings in the home structure:

(1) cracks appear in or around the foundation, walls, windows or doors

(2) doors and windows become difficult to open or close properly

 

Findings in the property:

(1) observation of a sinkhole developing

(2) water from well shows increased sediment

(3) outdoor plants wilt in a circular patch

(4) deep cracks in the sidewalk or driveway

(5) in ground swimming pools develops an unexplained crack or leak

 

Findings in the neighborhood:

(1) confirmed sinkhole activity affecting neighbors

(2) depressions appear in land that fill with water after storms

(3) deep cracks in the street or paved areas

 

The changes to the home are not specific to sinkholes, since a poor foundation or construction techniques could also explain the findings.
