Description

Rat and mice may leave clues to their presence.


Commonly reported clues may include:

(1) rodent droppings

(2) odor associated with rodent urine

(3) signs of gnawing on wood, food containers, food items

(4) presence of a nest

(5) sounds of scratching and scampering

(6) rodent runways

(7) change in pet behavior

(8) signs of rubbing, with grease or dirt marks on walls or containers

(9) foot marks or tracks

 

The clues are more predictive in a high prevalence area:

(1) history of prior rodent infestation

(2) residence in an area at high risk for rodents (such as old urban tenements)

(3) building with opportunities for entry of rodents

 

Direct evidence:

(1) A cat may be able to capture and leave the dead rodent in a visible area.

(2) Visual sighting.

(3) Sprung rodent trap.
