Description

Peyrony and Shapiro listed findings in a cancer patient in the Emergency Department which may be associated with admission to the intensive care unit (ICU).


Patient selection: cancer patient in the Emergency Department

 

Findings associated with admission to the ICU:

(1) no information available about the patient's underlying malignancy

(2) poor performance status

(3) significant immunodepression or other defect in host defenses (bone marrow transplant, neutropenia, T cell defect, etc)

(4) significant respiratory symptoms (dyspnea, hypoxemia, etc)

(5) sepsis

(6) significant electrolyte or metabolic disorder

(7) hyper or hypocoagulability (DIC, thromboembolism, bleeding, etc)

(8) neurologic complications

(9) absence of a clear diagnosis after clinical evaluation

(10) deferred admission to the ICU, with inadequate monitoring and deterioration on the wards
