A person exposed to a high concentration of a nitrogen oxide may develop a number of signs and symptoms during or soon after the exposure.
Respiratory tract signs and symptoms:
(1) shortness of breath (dyspnea)
(2) cough
(3) hemoptysis
(4) bronchospasm with exacerbation of asthma
(5) choking sensation
Other findings:
(1) methemoglobinemia
(2) irritation of mucous membranes, including sore throat
(3) conjunctivitis with burning eyes
(4) nausea and vomiting
(5) headache
(6) dizziness
(7) weakness
Signs and symptoms may last for one or two weeks.
Some patients may manifest delayed or subacute findings, depending on the level of exposure, host response and other factors.
