Description

A dental infection starts as a localized process. Early detection and management is important to avoid complications associated with dissemination of the infection.

Signs and symptoms related to the infected tooth:

(1) toothache (pulpitis, odontalgia)

(2) mobile tooth

(3) periodontal drainage of pus

(4) pain on palpation of surrounding gum

(5) pain triggered by chewing with or tapping on tooth

Regional findings of an infection that is still localized include:

(1) pain in mouth or jaw

(2) swelling inside of the mouth

Imaging studies may be helpful in determining the cause and extent of the infection.
