Description

Impaction of cerumen (ear wax) in the external auditory canal can result in a number of signs and symptoms.


Cerumen impaction is defined as:

(1) accumulation of cerumen in the external auditory canal

(2) causes one or both of the following:

(2a) symptoms

(2b) prevents assessment of the ear canal, tympanic membrane or audio-vestibular system

The canal does not need to be completely occluded.

 

Signs and symptoms may include:

(1) feeling of blockage within the ear

(2) itching

(3) decrease in hearing, which may range from mild to severe

(4) pain (otalgia)

(5) tinnitus

(6) sensation of imbalance

(7) reversible cognitive impairment in the elderly
