Description

A woman with uterine leiomyomas may develop one or more pelvic leiomyomas following a laparoscopic morcellation hysterectomy.


 

Clinical features:

(1) A woman has a history of uterine leiomyomas.

(2) The patient undergoes a laparoscopic morcellation hysterectomy.

(3) The surgeon does not take extra precautions to avoid retained tissue during the procedure.

(4) The woman subsequently develops one or more leiomyomas along the peritoneal surface of the pelvis and/or abdomen.

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) metastases from a leiomyosarcoma

(2) presence of the extra-uterine leiomyomas prior to the surgery
