A patient with a variety of inflammatory or infectious disorders may display "sickness behavior" (SB). Some of the features have been ascribed to the effects of various cytokines.
Sickness behavior may include the appearance or worsening of:
(1) malaise
(2) fatigue
(3) anxiety
(4) depression
(5) anorexia
(6) disordered sleep (hypo or hyper somnia)
(7) impaired performance and decreased activities
(8) decreased memory and other cognitive disturbances
