Description

Children under 12 may be a source of infection to patients and often require adult supervision. A child should only be allowed patient contact if they meet certain criteria.


 

General controls:

(1) The child must always be accompanied by an adult.

(2) The physician or nurse manager should authorize that sibling visits are permissible for the mother and/or infant.

(3) The child may be restricted to certain areas and should not be allowed to visit an area where they may be at risk for injury or infection.

(4) The child must scrub their hands and may need to be wear a barrier gown before contact with mother or infant.

(5) The number of visitors with the patient at any one time should be kept to a minimum.

(6) The times for visits may be restricted to certain hours.

(7) Children may need to wear a badge indicating that they have been cleared for the visit.

 

Screen for contagious disease - Visitation is not permitted if any of the following are noted:

(1) In the past 4 weeks, has the child had or been exposed to?

(1a) chickenpox

(1b) measles

(1c) rubella (German measles)

(1d) mumps

(1e) hepatitis

(1f) common cold

(1g) other contagious illness

(2) Has the child had within the past 48 hours?

(2a) skin rash

(2b) fever (temperature > 99°F)

(2c) vomiting

(2d) diarrhea

(2e) sore throat

(2f) earache

(2g) cough or sneezing

(2h) other infection

(3) Has the child been immunized in the past 4 weeks with any of the following vaccines?

(3a) polio

(3b) measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)

(3c) other live virus preparation
