Description

The Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) can be used to evaluate a patient for shoulder impairment.


Components:

(1) pain scale

(2) disability score

 

Pain scale:

(1) severity of pain at its worse

(2) severity when lying on involved side

(3) severity when reaching for something on a high shelf

(4) severity when trying to touch the back of the neck

(5) severity when pushing with the involved arm

 

Disability scale:

(1) difficulty washing hair

(2) difficulty washing back

(3) difficulty putting on undershirt or pullover sweater

(4) difficulty puttiing on a shirt with buttons down the front

(5) difficulty putting on pants

(6) difficulty placing an object on a hard shelf

(7) difficulty carrying a 10 lb object

(8) difficulty removing something from a back pants pocket

 

Scoring is with a 10 cm VAS scale from 0 (none) to 10 (extreme).

 

In each subscale the patient may mark only one item as not applicable. This item is not included in the score.

 

subscore for pain =

= SUM(points for all 5 components)

 

subscore for disability =

= SUM(points for all 8 components)

 

Interpretation:

minimum subscores and total score: 0

maximum subscore for pain: 50

maximum subscore for disability: 80

maximum total score: 130
