The Shoulder Abduction Finger Extension (SAFE) score can help predict post-stroke recovery of upper extremity function. The change in the score over time can give insights into the patient's status.
Patient selection: post-stroke
Parameters:
(1) shoulder abduction
(2) finger extension
Each is graded using the MRC muscle strength scale, from 0 (none) to 5 (normal).
SAFE score =
= (grade for shoulder abduction) + (points for finger extension)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 10
• The higher the score the better the prognosis.
