Description

Shortlasting Unilateral Neuralgiform Pain with Conjunctival Injection and Tearing (SUNCT) is a painful condition of uncertain cause.


 

Clinical features:

(1) The patient experiences repeated episodes consisting of brief paroxysms of unilateral ocular pain.

(2) The episodes are accompanied by ipsilateral autonomic dysfunction (conjunctival injection, tearing with rhinorrhea, forehead sweating).

(3) Most patients are male.

(4) Episodes occur only during the daytime and sometimes can be triggered mechanically by stimuli in the zone of the fifth cranial nerve and/or neck movements.

(5) The frequency of attacks may range from occasional attacks to many per hour.

(6) Severe cases may be associated with significant disability.

(7) The patient does not have any neurologic deficits.
