The Short Form of the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) can quickly assess a patient's pain and its impact on the patient.
Pain severity items:
(1) worst pain in the past 24 hours
(2) least pain in the past 24 hours
(3) average pain in the past 24 hours
(4) current pain level
Items 1 through 4 have a 10 cm VAS response anchored from 0 (no pain) to 10 (worst imaginable),
Pain medication items:
(1) pain medicines
(2) percentage of pain relief provided by current pain medications
Pain interference items:
(1) general activity
(2) mood
(3) walking ability
(4) normal work
(5) relationships
(6) sleep
(7) enjoyment of life
These items have a 10 cm VAS response anchored from 0 (no interference) to 10 (unable to perform).
