Description

Chromate can be found in shoes. A person who is sensitive to chromium salts may develop a dermatitis over the exposed skin.

Chromium may be present in a shoe because of:

(1) leather

(2) environmental contamination (often occupational)

Risk factors:

(1) direct skin contact with the chromate-containing material

(2) excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) or other foot moisture (to solubilize the chromate)

Clinical findings:

(1) The dermatitis is distributed over the foot and/or ankle.

(2) A patch test to chromate salts is positive.

Wearing socks, keeping the feet dry or wearing different shoes is usually sufficient to prevent recurrence.
