Finkelhor identified several risk factors associated with sexual victimization of girls less than 18 years of age. A risk score based on the sum of these "vulnerability factors" correlate with the likelihood of abuse. The author is from the University of New Hampshire.
Risk factors:
(1) stepfather present
(2) girl ever lived for a period without mother
(3) girl not emotionally close to mother (emotionally distant)
(4) mother never finished high school (impact greater if father well-educated)
(5) mother is punitive about sexual matters
(6) no signs of physical affection from father
(7) low socio-economic status
(8) 2 friends or less in childhood
Sexual abuse (exploitation) included:
(1) fondling
(2) exhibitionism
(3) oral-genital contact
(4) intercourse (relatively infrequent)
sexual abuse risk factor checklist =
= SUM(number of risk factors present)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 8
• The greater the number of risk factors the greater the risk of sexual victimization.
