Description

Acromegalics have enlarged sesamoids bones. Kleinberg et al evaluated the dimensions of the sesamoid bone in patients with and without acromegaly.

The sesamoid bone are identified just proximal to the metacarpal and proximal phalangeal joint of the thumb. These are ovoid bones.

Parameters:

(1) length of the bone (longest diameter) in mm

(2) width of the bone in mm

sesamoid index in square mm =

= (length axis in mm) * (width axis in mm)

Interpretation:

• The mean area of the sesamoid bone in normal adults in 20 square mm, with the upper limit 29 square mm.

• A male with acromegaly shows an index range of 30 to 63 square mm.

• A female with acromegaly shows an index range of 31 to 35 square mm.
