Description

A person who has had a significant exposure to an organic solvent may show elevation of S100B in the blood.

S100B is a calcium-binding protein in glial cells. Damage to astrocytes can release it into the serum. Units in serum are µg/L or ng/L.

Neurotoxicity of organic solvents:

(1) encephalopathy

(2) cognitive deficit

(3) peripheral neuropathy

(4) headache

(5) irritability

(6) fatigue

A sensitive method of detection is to establish a baseline of serum S100B prior to solvent exposure. The presence of an increase in serum S100B associated with signs of neurotoxicity would support the diagnosis.

Another test to consider is urine excretion of solvent metabolites.
