Description

The serum concentration of procalcitonin can help to identify a patient with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) who has a tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA).

Patient selection: acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Frequency of TOA in acute PDI: 15%

A serum procalcitonin concentration > 0.33 ng/mL had a sensitivity of 62% and specificity of 75% for TOA (Erenel et al). The precise cut-off might vary with the assay and lot.

The serum procalcitonin concentration did not predict failure of medical therapy (Karaca et al).
