The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) correlates directly with residual HES and may be used to estimate the circulating levels in donors with initial ESR below 5 mm/hr as follows:

= (1.797 + (0.396 * (postinfusion ESR))) mg/mL
The optimal level for component preparation is about 7.0 mg/mL.
