The Sertoli Cell Only Syndrome (SCOS) is a cause of male infertility that can be diagnosed by testicular biopsy. Fertility is possible if the patient is properly managed.
Synonym: germ cell aplasia
Patient selection: male with infertility or reduced fertility
Histologic features of a testicular biopsy:
(1) There is a complete absence of germ cells (involves all stages).
(2) Tubules contain Sertoli cells.
(3) The tubular architecture is preserved and not effaced by fibrosis.
Conditions that can cause SCOS:
(1) microdeletions of the Y chromosome
(2) Klinefelter syndrome
(3) viral orchitis
(4) radiation
(5) hormonal therapy for prostate cancer
(6) exposure to toxins or drugs
(7) idiopathic
