Description

A patient with pyomyositis may develop septic emboli during the bacteremia phase of the disease.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of pyomyositis, but other pathogens may be involved.

One or more muscles may be involved.

Most cases of pyomyositis involve the psoas muscle, pelvic muscles or muscles of the lower extremity. As a consequence, the emboli are often septic pulmonary emboli.

In addition to the septic emboli, the patient may develop infectious endocarditis, especially if the pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus.
