Several viruses can cause sensorineural hearing loss.

Viruses implicated in hearing loss:

(1) cytomegalovirus (CMV)

(2) lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV)

(3) HIV (conductive in addition to sensorineural)

(4) HSV

(5) measles (rubeola)

(6) rubella

(7) mumps

(8) West Nile virus (WNV)

(9) varicella zoster (VZV)


Clinical situations that may require further clarification:

(1) hearing loss associated with vaccination (measles)

(2) congenital/intrauterine/perinatal infection

(3) infections associated with being immunosuppressed or immunocompromised
