Description

A male infected with Schistosoma haematobium may develop a number of changes in the semen.

Schistosoma haematobium may involve the seminal vesicles, prostate and urinary bladder.

Changes that can be explained by Schistosoma haematobium:

(1) schistosome eggs in the semen

(2) a small amount of blood

(3) leukocytospermia

(4) reduced ejaculate volume

(5) increased sperm apoptosis (associated with DNA strand breaks as measured with the ApopTag in situ apoptosis detection kit)

Changes that usually have another explanation:

(1) azoospermia

(2) male infertility
