Description

Pestieau et al identified several findings on CT scans which can be used to determine if a patient with an abdominal or pelvic sarcoma is likely to benefit from reoperation. The authors are from the Washington Cancer Institute in Washington, DC.

The authors evaluated patients using CT scans and the Peritoneal Cancer Index (PCI, above).

Regions with worse prognosis with tumor masses > 5 cm or confluent:

(1) left lower quadrant

(2) pelvis

(3) distal ileum

Findings indicating better prognosis:

(1) involvement of <= 5 abdominopelvic regions (out of the 12 used in the Peritoneal Cancer Index) with tumor > 5 cm or confluent

(2) Peritoneal Cancer Index <= 15

Tumor >= 5 cm or Confluent in Pelvis

Tumor >= 0.5 cm on 2-4 Small Bowel Segments
