Description

A lung transplant donor should meet certain criteria to ensure optimum function and survival for the recipient.

< 45 years for heart-lung; < 65 years for lung only

chest trauma

not severe (none, mild, moderate)

cardiac arrest

not prolonged (heart-lung only)

infection

absent

chest X-ray

clear

PaO2

> 100 mm Hg on 40% O2; > 350 mm Hg on 100% O2

pulmonary secretions

minimal

HIV screen

negative

ABO type

compatible

crossmatch with recipient's serum

negative

chest size and total lung capacity

similar to recipient

tracheobronchial diameter

same as recipient

 

where:

• The age limits are from the 1993 ATS recommendations. Earlier reports used younger cutoffs (< 35 years for heart-lung and < 55 years for lung only).

• Griffith and Zenati use PaO2 > 300 mm Hg on 100% oxygen as the cutoff.
