Description

Segmental testicular infarction is a rare condition that often can be recognized based on the clinical presentation and imaging studies.

Presentation:

(1) lower abdominal and/or testicular pain

(2) testicular tenderness on palpation

(3) testicular mass (pseudotumor)

Causes may include:

(1 ) polycythemia

(2) sickle cell anemia

(3) acute epididymitis

(4) autoimmune vasculitis

(5) surgery or trauma

(6) diabetes mellitus

(7) torsion with detorsion

Detection of altered blood flow to a defined vascular territory can be seen on imaging studies, especially color-flow Doppler ultrasonography.

Differential diagnosis:

(1) testicular tumor (mass lesion)

(2) orchitis or testicular abscess (not limited to a defined vascular territory)

(3) complete testicular infarction (not limited to a defined vascular territory)
