Description

Schistosomiasis may be associated with secondary amyloidosis.

Occurrence: in regions of endemic schistosomiasis

Clinical features:

(1) it often presents in pediatric patients

(2) it may present with nephrotic syndrome and generalized edema

(3) hepatosplenomegaly is often present

(4) serum protein analysis shows hypergammaglobulinemia

(5) schistosomiasis is identified by suitable studies

A renal biopsy shows amyloidosis.

The diagnosis requires exclusion of other causes of amyloidosis.

Early diagnosis and treatment of the schistosomiasis can prevent further deterioration and often reversal of the renal impairment.
