Dirofilariasis may rarely involve the male genital tract.
Species: Dirofilaria repens
Normal reservoir: dogs, cats, ferrets, other wild carnivorous species
Vector: mosquitoes (Aedes, Culex, Anopheles)
Genital infection in a male may present as:
(1) pseudotumor of the epididymis
(2) nodule of the spermatic cord
(3) scrotal mass
(4) inguinal lymphadenitis
The patient may show eosinophilia in the peripheral blood. Serologic tests may be insensitive and nonspecific.
Diagnosis is typically made by:
(1) excision of the nodule
(2) sometimes by needle aspirate
(3) PCR
