Description

Pushker et al listed a number of questions that can be used to screen a patient for possible cysticercosis. These can help identify a patient who should have more definitive testing. The authors are from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India.


 

Cysticercus cellulosae is resting stage of Taenia solium in an intermediate host.

 

Has/Does the patient:

(1) lived in or traveled to an area endemic for Taenia solium?

(2) had an occupational exposure to infected pork?

(3) eaten raw pork?

(4) have a history of tapeworm infection?

(5) had Taenia eggs, proglottids or segments in the feces?

(6) have a family history for tapeworm infection or cysticercosis?

(7) have subcutaneous nodules?

(8) have unexplained neurologic signs or symptoms (headaches, ataxia, seizures, etc.)?

(9) have eosinophilia?
