Description

Van Gogh et al developed a simple screening questionnaire to evaluating a patient for problems with the voice following therapy for early glottic cancer. This can help identify patients who may benefit from a more careful evaluation of voice impairment. The authors are from Vrije Universiteit Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Items in questionnaire:

(1) voice sounds abnormal (breathy, rough, other)

(2) problems holding conversation because of voice

(3) problems making a telephone call because of voice

(4) problems when trying to shout

(5) need to strain to produce voice

Scoring: 10-point Likert scale, ranging from "very much" (1) to "none at all" (10)

Interpretation:

• The presence of 1 or more items with a score <= 5 is indicative of a voice impairment.

Performance:

• The reliability is rated as good.
