Siegel et al used a questionnaire to screen mothers at a pediatrician's office for domestic violence. The authors are from St. Luke Hospitals in Kentucky and Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati.
Subjects: Mothers or other female guardians who accompanied their children during a visit to a pediatrician.
The screen consists of 5 questions.
Questions for violence to pets and presence of firearms were included since these items are linked to domestic violence.
Interpretation:
• The presence of a positive response requires further evaluation of the woman to determine the nature and extent of any abuse.
• The presence of child abuse may require reporting to the local child protective authorities.
