One aspect of screening children for lead poisoning is to ask a few questions of the parents or guardians which can serve to identify those children at high risk for lead poisoning.
A parent or guardian should be asked if the child:
(1) have a significant exposure to a house built before 1960 with peeling or chipping paint
(2) have a significant exposure to a house built before 1978 with recent renovations
(3) has sibling, family member, neighbor, playmate or friend diagnosed with lead poisoning
(4) has significant contact with an adult whose job involves lead exposure
(5) has significant contact with an adult who has a hobby that involves lead exposure
(6) live or play near an active lead smelter, battery recycling plant or other site from which lead could be released
